About GW Career Quest:

Career Quest offers GW students an exclusive opportunity to gain an up-close and personal experience with leading organizations in major cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

The program provides students with an opportunity to:

  • hone their informational interviewing and networking skills with employers
  • learn how an organization works and about their job and internship opportunities
  • hear from employers about their professional journeys and the  pathways they followed to career success
  • connect with GW alumni in major metropolitan areas
  • explore and experience the culture and pulse of exciting cities, such as New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco

The Fall Break Career Quest program provides juniors, seniors and graduate students interested in media, public relations, & communications an invaluable professional and personal development experience in New York City during Fall Break 2017.

Winter Break 2018 - Los Angeles

Monday, January 8 – Friday, January 12, 2018

The Los Angeles program is for upperclassmen and graduate students from all majors and fields interested in personal development and career exploration in LA during Winter Break 2018.

Who is eligible to participate?

This exclusive opportunity is open to GW juniors, seniors and graduate students.  Your primary designation must be "student" in order to be eligible to submit an application.  Exchange students are ineligible.  Distance learners are encourage to apply; however, all students are required to participate in the entirety of Career Quest.

Are students from all majors/degree programs eligible?

Yes, undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled full-time or part-time in any degree program at George Washington University during the application period are eligible.

Are there GPA requirements?

All applicants should be in good academic standing.  Participation is contingent upon the student maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Do I need to be in good disciplinary standing with the university to be considered?

Yes.  The selection process will involve a review of academic and disciplinary conduct records maintained by the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities.

Are graduating students eligible?

Yes. GW undergraduate and graduate students who will continue as matriculating full-time or part-time students in a degree program in the fall of 2017 are eligible.

Are new incoming students eligible?

Yes, all new students are eligible.

Are International students eligible?

Yes, international students with a visa status of F1 or J1 may apply.

Fall Break 2017 (NYC) & Winter Break 2018 (LA) application submissions accepted:  Tuesday, August 1, 2017, thru Thursday, August 13, 2017.

Students must complete an application through MyGW and by submitting supporting documents (unofficial transcripts, resume).  Applicants will also need to complete an interview. 

Selection Process

What are the selection criteria for program participants?

The general criteria (in no particular order) on which applications will be evaluated are: the student's eligibility, demonstration of the applicant’s career and academic goals, quality of essays and interview responses.

Who will be selecting the candidates?

A committee consisting of members of the  Center for Career Services staff.

When will the applicants be notified?

Information coming soon. All applicants for Fall 2017 & Winter 2018 will be notified of their status via the e-mail contact information provided on the application.

Program Fees & Expectations

Program Fees

  • Fall Break 2017 - New York City: Program hotel accommodations, travel costs throughout New York City and meals will be covered by GW for Sunday, October 8 through Tuesday, October 10, 2017.  Students must provide their own transportation to and from New York City. Financial assistance may be available on a case-by-case basis for eligible students to assist with resources to cover transportation to New York City only.
  • Winter Break 2018 - Los Angeles: Program hotel accommodations, travel costs throughout Los Angeles and meals will be covered by GW for Monday, January 8 through Thursday, January 11, 2018.  Students must provide their own transportation to and from Los Angeles. Financial assistance may be available on a case-by- case basis for eligible students to assist with resources to cover transportation to Los Angeles only.

Failure to meet program requirements will result in a $125 penalty fee.

If you believe you may need financial assistance to help pay for your program fees, email careerquest@gwu.edu for an application.  All financial assistance applications are due by Sunday, August 13, 2017, 11:59 PM. 

Program Expectations

All program participants for GW Career Quest will be expected to do the following as participants in the program:

  1. Complete the Program Acceptance Form. The link to the Program Acceptance Form will be forwarded to each program participant selected by the committee.  The form will include information on emergency contacts, the travel itinerary for travel to and from the specific trek, and program and payment options.
  2. Attend a mandatory informal meeting and a separate orientation/training. During this orientation students will receive an overview of GW Career Quest and techniques for building upon resume-writing, interviewing and networking skills. The first informal meeting for CQ NY is Orientation is tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 15, 6 - 8 pm & orientation is Wednesday, October 4, 6 -8 pm.  Additional informal meeting will be announced.
  3. Participate in planning and work with your respective industry cohort.
  4. Complete post-program evaluation and blog post.

Post-Program Expectations

After the end of the program, all participants agree to:

  • Submit a post to be featured in the #GWCareerSuccess blog. Here are the Student Blogger Guidelines.
  • Submit a GW Career Quest evaluation.
  • Participate in potential Q&A sessions, donor-recognition events, etc. as requested, to promote the GW Career Quest program to future applicants.
