About GW Career Quest:

Career Quest offers GW students an exclusive opportunity to gain an up-close and personal experience with leading organizations in major cities, including New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and Los Angeles

The program provides students with an opportunity to:

  • hone their informational interviewing and networking skills with employers
  • learn how an organization works and about their job and internship opportunities
  • hear from employers about their professional journeys and the  pathways they followed to career success
  • connect with GW alumni in major metropolitan areas
  • explore and experience the culture and pulse of exciting cities, such as New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and Los Angeles

GW Career Quest Program & Application Information

Eligibility

Who is eligible to participate?

This exclusive opportunity is open to current GW undergraduate students (class of 2019 or 2020) as well as graduate students.  Your primary designation must be "student" in order to be eligible to submit an application.  GW faculty, staff, and exchange students are ineligible.  Distance learners are encouraged to apply; however, all students are required to participate in the entirety of Career Quest.

Are students from all majors/degree programs eligible?

Yes, undergraduate (class of 2019 or 2020) and graduate students who are currently enrolled full-time or part-time in any degree program at George Washington University during  the time of the treks (October 2018 or January 2019) are eligible.

Are there GPA requirements?

All applicants should be in good academic standing.  Participation is contingent upon the student maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Do I need to be in good disciplinary standing with the university to be considered?

Yes.  The selection process will involve a review of academic and disciplinary conduct records maintained by the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities.

Are graduating students eligible?


Yes. GW undergraduate and graduate students who will continue as matriculating full-time or part-time students at the time of the Career Quest  (October 2018 or January 2019) are eligible.

Are new incoming students eligible?


Yes. However, you may only apply once you have officially enrolled full-time or part-time in any degree program at George Washington University.

Are International students eligible?

Yes, international students with a visa status of F1 or J1 may apply.

Application Process & Timeline

Application Process

Fall 2018 (NYC) and Winter 2019 (San Francisco) application submissions accepted:  EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, August  20, 2018 (at 12pm noon).

Students must complete an application through MyGW and by submitting supporting documents (unofficial transcripts, resume).  Applicants will also need to complete an interview. 

Selection Process

What are the selection criteria for program participants?

The general criteria (in no particular order) on which applications will be evaluated are: the student's eligibility, demonstration of the applicant’s career and academic goals, quality of essays and interview responses.

Who will be selecting the candidates?

A committee consisting of members of the Center for Career Services staff.

When will the applicants be notified?

Final selections will be made by Friday, September 7, 2018. All applicants for Fall 2018 (NYC) and Winter 2019 (San Francisco) will be notified of their status via their @gwu.edu email address.

Program Fees & Expectations

Program Fees

Please note: GW Career Quest covers lodging, transportation from airport to hotel,transportation to and from site visits, and breakfast and lunch.

  • Fall Break 2018 - New York (Sunday, October 7- Tuesday, October 9, 2018): Students cover their own transportation to and from New York  and all dinners. If you believe you may need financial assistance to help pay for your program fees, please complete the Financial Need form when submitting your application.
  • Winter Break 2019 - San Francisco (Monday, January 7-Friday,  January 11, 2019): Students cover their own transportation to and from San Francisco and all dinners. If you believe you may need financial assistance to help pay for your program fees, please complete the Financial Need form when submitting your application.

Failure to meet program requirements will result in a $125 penalty fee.

Program Expectations

All program participants for GW Career Quest will be expected to do the following as participants in the program:

  1. Complete the Program Acceptance Form. The link to the Program Acceptance Form will be forwarded to each program participant selected by the committee.  The form will include information on emergency contacts, the travel itinerary for travel to and from the specific trek, and program and payment options.
  2. Attend all mandatory meetings prior to departure.
  3. Abide by the GW Code of Student Conduct 
  4. Complete post-program evaluation and blog post. After the end of the program participants agree to:
  • Submit a post to be featured in a Center for Career Services blog. 
  • Submit a GW Career Quest evaluation.
  • Participate in potential Q&A sessions, donor-recognition events, etc. as requested, to promote the GW Career Quest program to future applicants.
