Early Childhood Tutoring
Each year several hundred GW students impact the lives of pre-K and elementary school children in the District of Columbia by improving their school readiness and literacy skills. If you are interested in using your FWS offer to become an early childhood tutor, you will work with GW's Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service to determine which tutoring program works best for you. Tutors can choose from many locations and varying work schedules. In general, a tutor will work six to eight hours per week; however, it is important that you carefully consider making a year-long commitment to tutoring because a child will come to depend on you.
GW Jumpstart is an AmeriCorps program that works with 3–5 year olds to prepare them for kindergarten. Jumpstart requires a 300-hour commitment during a given academic year. GW SMARTDC is an initiative in which the Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service partners with seven community organizations and two individual elementary schools to provide literacy tutoring to students in grades K – 6.
All tutoring opportunities are listed in the Student Employment Talent Management System as an "On-Campus FWS" position.
